Private Tuition

Melissa is a dedicated and enthusiastic educator and has developed a confident and informed pedagogic style over the last eight years in a variety of situations from private lessons to school band workshops. She currently runs an in demand private teaching studio in St Ives with over thirty students. Melissa also periodically tutors at a number of Sydney school band camps and workshops including Ravenswood, Wahroonga Public School, Killara Public School and Turramurra High School. She takes great pride in her students’ musical development and has had outstanding success with her pupils participating in graded music exams, eisteddfods and HSC music.

Jazz Improvisation

For students interested in jazz improvisation, I focus on fundamental listening skills and practice based learning to develop a love of the genre and create confidence in improvisation . At more advanced levels there is an increasing focus on a development of jazz specific patterns and language devices.

Graded Music Exams

Experienced teaching AMEB and ABRSM exams including diploma levels. A focus on developing confidence in aural skills through a consistent and graduated approach relevant to the grade level. An emphasis on students choosing their own repertoire which they can enjoy practicing and using recording technologies so they can benefit from self assessment of their own performances.

Instrumental Technique

Teaching with a focus on developing a beautiful and unique saxophone sound through the study of overtones, harmonics, vibrato and extended techniques. Speed and technical work focus on developing correct hand and finger positioning, scales, etudes and creating unique exersises for the technical challenges faced in repertoire.
